Scorpion Solitaire looks like Spider and plays like Yukon. One deck is dealt into seven columns of seven cards, with three face-down cards at the bottom of the first four columns, and three cards are kept back as a reserve. Your goal is to put each suit in order in a column, King down to Ace. Any face-up card can be moved with every card on top of it, so you dig through a column by moving whole groups, not single cards. How to play

  1. Deal 49 cards in seven columns of seven. The first four columns have three cards face down under four face up; the other three are all face up. The last three cards are the reserve.
  2. Build down in the same suit: the Seven of hearts can go on the Eight of hearts, and nothing can go on an Ace.
  3. Any face-up card can move, together with all the cards on top of it, in order or not. Only the card you pick up has to fit.
  4. Only a King, with whatever is on top of it, can fill an empty column. A face-down card turns over when it is uncovered.
  5. Once, when you choose, deal the three reserve cards onto the first three columns. A suit complete from King to Ace leaves the table; you win when all four have gone.

Example

The Nine of spades sits halfway down a column with three mixed cards on it. If the Ten of spades ends another column, move the Nine there and the three cards on it go along. The column you took it from is now three cards shorter, which may uncover a face-down card.

Playing tip

Work on the first four columns early: the twelve face-down cards are what usually blocks a game. Save the reserve until no useful move is left, and empty a column only when you have a King ready to fill it.

Frequently asked questions

How is Scorpion different from Spider Solitaire?

Both are won by building suits from King to Ace in the columns. Spider uses two decks, moves only ordered same-suit runs and deals new rows from a stock. Scorpion uses one deck, moves any face-up card with everything on it, and has only a three-card reserve.

Can any card go in an empty column in Scorpion?

No, only a King, with any cards on top of it. The variant in which any card may fill a space is called Wasp, and it is easier.

Is Scorpion Solitaire free?

Yes. Press Play now at the top of this page and the game opens right here, with no download and no account. A free account adds races against a bot or another player on the same deal.
