Yukon Solitaire is Klondike with the stock taken away and a surprising freedom handed back in return. All 52 cards are dealt at the start into seven columns of 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 cards: 21 face down and the top five of each column face up. You can lift any face-up card together with everything on top of it, in order or not, so the game is less about waiting for the right card and more about digging out the ones you cannot see. How to play

  1. Deal 28 cards as in Klondike: seven columns of one to seven cards, with only the top card of each face up. Then deal the other 24 cards face up onto columns two to seven, four on each. There is no stock and nothing to draw.
  2. Build the columns down in alternating colours: a red Seven goes on a black Eight.
  3. Any face-up card can be moved with all the cards on top of it, whether or not they are in order. Only the card you pick up has to fit where it lands.
  4. A face-down card turns face up when it is uncovered. Only a King, with whatever is on top of it, can fill an empty column.
  5. Build the four foundations up by suit from Ace to King. A card on a foundation stays there. You win when all 52 cards are home.

Example

The Six of hearts has a Queen, a Two and a Nine lying on it. Another column ends with the Seven of clubs. You can move the Six and all three cards on it onto the Seven in a single move, because only the Six has to fit the Seven. The Queen, the Two and the Nine simply come along for the ride.

Playing tip

Work on the columns with the most face-down cards first; the two on the right hide five and six. Before you empty a column, make sure a King is ready to move into it, because no other card can.

Frequently asked questions

How is Yukon different from Klondike?

Yukon uses Klondike’s seven columns but deals the 24 stock cards face up onto the table, so there is no stock to draw from. In exchange you can move any face-up group of cards, even one that is not in sequence.

Can every Yukon deal be won?

No. Some deals are blocked from the start, and many more are lost by the order of the moves. The game tells you when no move can turn over a hidden card or send a card home, and offers a new deal.

What are Russian Solitaire and Alaska?

Two Yukon variants with the same deal and the same group moves. Russian Solitaire builds down in the same suit instead of alternating colours; Alaska builds up or down in the same suit.

Is Yukon Solitaire free to play?

Yes. Press Play now at the top of this page and a solo game opens right here, with no download and no account. A free account adds races against a bot or another player on the same deal.
